The Enigma of Being: An Analysis of the Underlying Triad in Camusian Philosophy
Abstract
Agnosticism in Albert Camus' thought manifests itself in an inescapable trinity: God, rebellion, and history. These interconnected elements constitute his philosophy of the absurd and arise from the human restlessness to find meaning in a universe that apparently has none. In failing to find definitive answers to the tension between the desire for eternity and finite reality, a deep sense of meaninglessness and existential emptiness emerges in the human being. Faced with this, one can only choose between two paths: placing one’s faith in an abstract universal that offers consolation or embracing rebellion—a vital impulse of nonconformity that encompasses temporal existence. Thus, Camus' philosophy of the absurd addresses this duality by confronting human existence through personal action. The absence of a pre-established meaning compels reason to forge its own determinations, risking the transgression of its limits in pursuit of ontological justice. This impulse is interpreted as a vindication of the capacity of being in the face of a burdensome existence devoid of absolutes. Within this framework, the present analysis seeks to rethink the logic of the absurd based on the relationship among God, rebellion, and history, and to warn of the danger of exceeding the limits of reason. When the rebellion of being transforms into a movement of uncontrollable conquest, it can unleash the destruction of both the individual and the universals that constitute his or her identity.
