Comparative studies on the performance of cooperatives: A systematic literature review

Abstract

The pursuit of perpetual economic growth through a system characterized by an unequal distribution of wealth threatens the planet's ecological balance. In light of this problem, there is a growing awareness of the need to foster economies based on cooperative enterprises. It is therefore essential to understand the economic performance of this business model based on available empirical evidence. To date, systematic reviews of the scientific literature have not clearly established whether the economic performance of cooperatives is superior or inferior to that of private firms. This study conducted a systematic review of the scientific literature, focusing on comparative studies of cooperatives and their capitalist counterparts to assess their performance in terms of overall performance, productivity, efficiency and resilience. We employed the PRISMA methodology for systematic reviews, adapting it to the field of business administration research, along with qualitative variables to classify and group the empirical evidence from the primary studies. The hypothesis that cooperatives outperform private firms is confirmed. The paper concludes with suggestions for future comparisons of business models and for the generalization of the findings.
